Taking the camera is one thing, but remembering to use it is another. Unfortunately I missed many of the family that attended. All of our children, spouses and grand children attended the campout and we should have had such great pictures to show you, but alas I didn't think to get the camera out of the trailer. We had a great time and enjoyed the family a lot. Unfortunately most of the family had gone because of cold weather prior to taking pictures. Here we are with three of our Grand children, Jacom, the tall good looking oneMe and Louise, Eliza, and Adelaide.

This picture is of our camping area. What a great site for a campout. Unfortunately I didn't have the camera when the Moose walked into camp. This picture has Teresa our daughter and Melissa who is married to our Son Joseph, and Evan who is married to our Daughter Holly.

Here is a night shot of the teardrop trailer. You can see we were setting up in a wind storm and never did get the tent set up correctly. The trailer was better than we ever imagined it would be and we slept warmer than we expected.

This picture has our daughters Holly and Teresa and our daughter in Law Melissa. It takes a lot of work to feed a large group and they worked their heads off to get it done. Our Older Daughter Mandi didn't get here until late as she was at a training event in Seattle. The Teardrop kitchen really came in handy for cooking, storage, and clean up. Having the little dressing and bathroom tent was a great up grade from our last trip.

Here are three of our six beautiful grand daughters. We want to thank the Wilkinson's for letting us use this great camp. Louise was doing a little last minute pick up around the camp. It was really nice to have the lights in the kitchen. It gave us all the lighting we needed to work. I'm not sure if we got out the flash lights at all.

Teardrop trailer construction 19

WE ARE DONE! Well not quite, but we are done enough to start using the trailer. We are going to register it tomorrow so we can start pulling it around. It will be nice to be able to bring it home from the shop and work on little things in the evenings. We installed the gas lifts this weekend. I guess it is better to be lucky than smart. Hit the installation perfectly the first try. Not bad for not having any instructions. We bought these from a company that had gone out of business and was liquidating inventory. They work great. We lift the lid about 12" and the lid slowly opens the rest of the way. It is easy to put down without any effort at all. They work better than we ever dreamed.

As you can tell we had to replace the leather straps on our trunk. The black genuine leather straps broke after the first weekend. We discovered in the small print that the genuine leather had some man made fibers. What it really had was a microscopic leather veneer with cardboard interior. We didn't buy "made in China" the second time. We also installed some sash locks to pull the lid down tight and keep it secure.

This is a side view showing how the trailer looks with the trunk complete.

We installed a lid stay so we could access the box without holding the lid up by hand. We also put in the battery tie downs so the battery doesn't bounce all over the place. This picture seems a little strange in it's color because the flash is bouncing.

Side view of the completed trailer.

This picture shows the fold down stabilizers. There are four, one for each corner. They will make it nice when the wind blows so you are not rocking all over the place.

This picture shows the undercarriage after it was all sealed with rubberized coating. We used this product so it would be easy to recoat when neccessary.

We have a few minor things to complete yet. Our punch list is as follows:

Complete the plumbing hook up to the pump.

Add a light in the trunk lid.

Insulate the ice chest in the front trunk

Complete the oven insulation and slide out

Clean the overspray off the roof vent

Putty, seal and weatherstrip the door frames

Not much to do as you can tell. A good morning for the both of us and we will have everything done.

Well for those who have been following our build, we hope to see you on the road somewhere. We will be happy to give you a closer view. We will be adding to this blog as we add things to the trailer and hope to put up blogs about our trips.

PS. We did get the trailer licensed on Monday. We pulled it over to purgatory flats and had it inspected. It was great on the road. It was funny how much smaller the trailer looked on the back of the truck. Got a few comments from people along the way. Quite frankly it is exciting to have the trailer this far along. It creates new enthusiasm to finish the minor details.

Teardrop trailer construction 18

This is not a new picture, but to our surprise others have been following our construction blog. It was nice that "Camping Earth" did a blog piece and encouraged others to check in on our progress. We gained most of our knowledge about these trailers from others on line and are more than willing to assist those who have questions. Mostly we wanted to answer a few questions that we didn't know had been asked.

First to "Cen". We cut our plywood panels with a jig saw. We cut the first side and then used it as the pattern for the second side. We then lined them up and screwed them together so that we could use a belt sander to even them up. We were very careful to cut slowly and stay on the outside of our line. This allowed us to sand to the line making two perfectly matched sides. It isn't rocket science though. If you make a mistake just take a little more off the pattern. No one will ever know.

To "Tim Outdoors" Thanks for the inquiry about our completion date. Thanksgiving through Christmas is our busy time. We don't really have time to work on our own stuff until the holidays are over. We are going to get it licensed before the first of the year. We have a short list of things we still want to do but none of them would keep us from using the trailer. We will put up pictures and dialog about the trip. Again thanks for your interest.

Teardrop trailer construction 17

We didn't work on the trailer much today because of other committments but we did get the hinge and straps on the front trunk

This completes the outside of the box and really everything that goes on the outside of the trailer. We sold it and have now built us a new table. We sell it in the colors we show on the chairs in addition to a dark green and a mahogany color like the seats. We covered the top with Durabak truck liner. It was messy and we didn't do the most professional job but it looks pretty nice. We also dicovered it is pretty forgiving. We were able to cut off some bad spots and touch it up. Over all we are pretty happy with the results. We are going to hinge the front trunk next and weather strip it and put buckles to keep it closed. This will allow us to mount the battery permantly and hook it up.

Side view gives you a pretty good idea of how the trailer looks. Sorry about the mess at the shop. We had a storm that blew sawdust out of the bins and then rained on it.

Rear view shows the rear trunk all completed. We let the durabak dry over the weekend and then weather stripped the inside. We have a short list of things to complete but are close enough to get it licensed.

We pulled it the other day and it tracks very nicely. As you can see we got started on the box for the front of the trailer. it will be covered with Rhino liner to blend in with the top.

This is a front view of the box. First off we insulated the roof and completed the skin on the roof. We also fastened the roof fan in place after applying some water proof mastic.

You can see in the second picture the front of the trailer. You will notice the little black square and the white pipe. That is the fan and air inlet for our cooler. When we get the box on the front it will have a space for ice. The fan blows air into the ice chest and up through the pipe and into the trailer. it is supposed to cool the room up to 30 degrees.

Next is the DVD player. It is wired up and working now. It hangs in the little tray on the door and can be tilted to the proper viewing angle. You can see the 12 volt outlet in the ceiling. It can work off the trailer battery or the DVD battery.

The next picture shows the front of the cooling system. The large grill on the right is the outlet fan, and the grill on the left is the inlet. (Friday and Saturday) It may not show but we got a lot done. Not as much as we hoped but good stuff. First of all we ran the wiring for the side markers, side lights, and tail lights. This then made it possible to glue on the veneer siding. It really went on well. With that in place we received the fenders last week so we painted and installed them. It really gives the trailer a solid look to have them in place. The color of the siding and the accents will be like the inside of the sleeping area. Cinnamon sugar paneling black burnout trim. You can see on this picture that we have installed the shore inlet so that we can have 110 volt power in the trailer. Over the next few weeks I believe we will make a good showing on the outside and it is going to be good.

Our main objective this weekend was to get the wiring done, and we did. It was hecktic and we had to do trial and error but we figured it out. It was fun when we plugged it in and all the lights came on. Even funner when the lights running off the battery came on. We installed the heater and hooked it up and also installed the outlet where our DVD player will fit. It feels so good to have this done. We can now get on with the wood stuff that we understand.

This next picture shows the power converter installed in the galley. Kent continued to work on the side doors. This view shows the trim painted black and inserted in the opening. He also has the frame for the other side made and fit into the opening. As you can see he has cut the opening for the round window. Kent is a real craftsman and has done a great job with the doors and paneling.

While Kent was working on the doors I started on the hatch door. It is a challenge to make but I think it is starting to turn out OK. I put the top and bottom rails together and then screwed the frame where I wanted it. I then installed the remaining spars and corner blocks to make it ridged. You can see that I framed the openings for the tail lights also.

Here is another view of the hatch door raised up. When I was ready to lift it I removed the screws that held it in place and it remained in it's original shape and appears to be working pretty well. The coolest thing was the installation of the doors on the cabinets in the sleeping compartment. The pictures really don't do it justice as they really look cool. It really gives the cabin a look of nearing completion until you look at the outside.

We also cut the curved components to build the trunk lid over the kitchen. We will be installing it this weekend if we have the time to work on it. You might notice that the cherry blocks in the door are starting to darken. We are hoping that they match the contrast of the counter eventually.

Kent installed the other wall of paneling while I was in Provo last week and built the door frame. The frame will be black to match the cabinets. It is really neat how the paneling is matching the wall configuration. He has the round window marked so it will most likely be cut out this weekend. We also installed the ceiling paneling. It is a shiplap pattern. We have had this material in our warehouse for about four years and couldn't sell it, so we sanded it up and finished it to match. Again the picture doesn't do it justice as it is really beautiful.

Teardrop trailer construction 5

We made a little progress today and things are starting to look up. We have the fronts done but not the drawer boxes.

The cabinet frame is mounted and the partitions are in place. These cabinets will have a flat panel door that is black. The panels will have the same herring bone paneling that the walls have. It should be a nice accent. All of the casing around the door will also be black and there will be a shallow shelf on the other wall that will be black also.

Here is a picture of the panneling installed on the side wall. You might wonder what happened to the door that was cut into the side. Well we put the plywood back into the opening and screwed it in place so that we could install the wood tiles over the top of the door. That way when we cut the door out this week all the tiles will match up on the door. We think the paneling is turning out awsome.

Teardrop trailer construction 4

While I was up North this week Kent began the
install of the cabinets and paneling in the teardrop trailer. I mentioned before that we were using scrap materials for this construction. You will see here that we made the countertops out of waste maple and lyptus wood creating a checker board pattern in the countertop and the doors. The doors are made out of maple and cherrywood because we didn't have enough lyptus to do them also. The contrast is not as great but the cherry will darken over the next few years and the contrast should become similar. We are not entirely happy with it right now and have some ideas on adjusting the finish to make it look better. I might mention that the center upper door is actually the size of a chess board. If you are so inclined it can be taken down for a good ole chess (checkers) match.

This is a view of the little under mount sink we are putting in. We will eventually have running water that is heated. This will make cooking and clean up a lot easier. The other object you see cut into the backsplash in the first picture is the power converter that will change 110 volts to 12 volts DC for the operation of lights etc. The opening in the middle of the base cabinets is for a little stove that has gas burners on the top and a little oven in the front.

This picture is taken from the inside of the sleeping compartment. You can see the back of the power converter sticking through the back of the backsplash. This space will become the electrical chase for panels and wiring. A face frame will attach to the front of the black shelf hiding all of the electrical and giving us easy access. We think we have the electrical figured out but hope our electrically inclined relatives will check it over and make sure. You can also see in this picture that we changed the interior paneling to a wood tile pattern. this makes it easier to use scrap material. Kent distressed the tiles and finished it in a cinammon sugar glaze.

This picture shows the black face frame that will go on the bedroom side. The doors will be a black glaze with rubbed burnished edges. It is a nice accent with the Cinammon sugar finish. We have some dividers and electrical chases to install and then the frame will be fastened into place.

Teardrop trailer construction 3

Today we finished the framing of the main compartment. In this first picture you can see that we cut out the sides. It took a little while to lay it out but we finall y decided on the shape we wanted. After cutting one side we used the original as the pattern and cut out the second one. After that it was a matter of screwing them together to sand them to an exact
match.

Next came the glue up of the floor. Our trailer is 5 ft wide so we cut two sheets of plywood, routed wood wafers every six inches on the joint and then glued and clamped them together until dry. We have a solid metal frame down the center of our trailer frame so this joint will be supported all the way.

Once the floor was done we fit it to the frame and sanded the joint and floor. We then took it into the spray room and sealed it. The bottom was sealed from moisture with asphalt emolsion and them bolted and glued to the frame.

We knotched the back panels for the trunk lid and started standing the walls and adding the cross members. We have been building a set of cherry interior doors for a company in Las Vegas so all of our cross members have been cut out of cherry scrap. Pretty costly to buy but more scrap than we will use. It is actually coming together pretty well. It even looks like some of the pictures.

This is a close up of the ceiling framing. We have framed an opening for the motorized vent. These trailers are air tight when they are done so you have to be able to open a window and get a little air movement. Each framing member is screwed and glued together for strength.

This is where we stopped for the day. My brother and I have searched the internet to find all we can about these little travel trailers. I have seen them for years on the road and thought they were the stupidest idea for a trailer ever. How did they get all that stuff through those tiny doors? I didn't realize that it was a sleeping trailer with a lift up hatch in the back that revealed a small kichenette for camping. A traveling bedroom for two that you can hook up to a car if you want and take off. They were popular after World War II and many were made out of materials salvaged from military vehicles and airplanes. Wow what a neat idea that has re-invented itself in our day to become a rising fad.
We have decided to build a Benroy model similar to this picture . It seems to fit our purposes the most. This picture was taken off the internet for a sample. We may build and sell ours so we have the resources to build a more elaborate model as a keeper. We have an extensive background in commercial and residential construction as well as owning and running our own custom cabinet shop. We should be able to do this.

We have toyed with building a woody similar to the one shown here on the left. Having a cabinet shop would almost make this a must. We spray a considerable amount of auto lacquer on exterior doors. We were thinking that we could finish it up pretty nice with auto lacquer and actually give it a good wax job occassionally to repel water. Anyway don't be surprised if we end up with a woody.

Phase 1-The first thing we are going to do is build the trailer frame. We have old lumber racks that have not been used for a while and a left over truck rack that can be cut up. We are going to salvage this material to build the frame.

We have several spare tires and wheels from cabinet trailers that we were going to throw away until we decided to build the trailer. We may get through this first phase without having to purchase very much. Kent (My brother) and I cut up the scrap and laid out the frame on the floor of our shop. We used pipe clamps to hold it together to insure it all fit correctly. To a degree the design was created based on the available size of the material. This is what it looked like after welding it all together.

We ordered 2000 lb rubber torsion 1/2 axels and hubs from Northern tool. We learned a lesson about start angles. I didn't know the difference between a 7" start angle and a 3". I selected the 7" and found out the frame now sits 4" higher off the ground than I wanted. We were going to exchange them but decided the extra clearance might be good for some of the back country roads around here. There is also the possibility of building a storage box into the floor.
Did I mention that we don't know how to weld. We do have a couple of really good welders that work for us. It looks like they are willing to help out during slow times at the shop. We may even get a lesson or two.

We are painting the trailer frame. We sanded it down and primed it. There was a bit of rust on the metal when we salvaged it. Not much and it sanded off easily. We used rust preventive black paint for the frame. it is amazing how much better the frame looks with a couple coats of black paint on it. Kent had a can of Aluminum chrome paint so we sanded and painted the wheels. Not custom chrome wheels but better looking than they were before.

When we

mounted the wheels on the frame it almost looked like it could end up being a pretty good trailer. A few more items to mount on the trailer and we will be ready for the floor. We need safety chains for towing and a trailer jack for leveling the trailer when it is un-hooked and parked.

Goodwin Mill and Cabinet, LC

This is an example of one of the kitchens made in our cabinet shop. We are currently shipping them across the country to several wholesale distributers. Our main turning business is locally with several stair companies. We turn in all wood species and will do small jobs as well as the large ones. Many individuals design their own patterns and bring them to us to turn. We also do turnings in restoration projects that need that matching turning that hasn't been available for a hundred years.

Here is another example of the turnings we do. This staircase is in a home in Santa Clara, Utah.

Occasionall we get to produce custom items such as this paneling that covers the complete outside of a round room. We also built the doors to fit the same radius. This room is in a commercial office building in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
